Emergency Guidance
Dental Emergency Advice

Always call our office (703.534.3444) to contact Dr. Saba immediately if you have any urgent concern. Here is guidance for common dental emergencies:

👑
Lost Fillings, Crowns & Bridges

This is usually a minor problem that rarely causes more than slight sensitivity and can often wait until regular office hours. Lost crowns can often be temporarily replaced over the original tooth. If you need a few days before visiting, try placing a small amount of denture adhesive (Fixodent) inside the crown to hold it in place temporarily.

🦷
Toothache or Severe Pain

Call our office immediately. For temporary relief, over-the-counter pain relievers may help. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum tissue as this can cause damage to the surrounding tissue.

💥
Broken or Knocked-Out Tooth

Call us immediately. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist — gently place it back in the socket, in milk, or hold it in your cheek next to the gum. Time is absolutely critical. The sooner you call, the better the outcome.

Dental Emergency?

Do not wait — call Dr. Saba directly. We provide after-hours urgent care and will see you as soon as possible.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the most frequently asked questions about dentistry and oral health. Have another question? We’d love to hear from you.

Bad breath (halitosis) can be an unpleasant and embarrassing condition. In healthy people, the major reason is microbial deposits on the tongue, especially the back of the tongue — studies show that brushing the tongue can reduce bad breath by as much as 70%. Common causes include: reduced saliva flow during sleep, certain foods (garlic, onions), poor oral hygiene, periodontal (gum) disease, dental cavities, dry mouth from medications, tobacco use, dieting (ketones), dehydration, and certain medical conditions including diabetes, liver/kidney problems, and chronic sinus infections. Keeping a record of what you eat and reviewing your medications with your dentist can help identify the cause.
Practice good oral hygiene — brush at least twice a day with ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste and floss daily. Brush or use a tongue scraper to clean the back of the tongue. Replace your toothbrush every 2–3 months. See your dentist at least twice a year for check-ups. Stop smoking or chewing tobacco. Drink water frequently. Use an antiseptic mouthwash as recommended by your dentist. In most cases your dentist can treat the underlying cause of bad breath.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day (especially before bedtime) with an ADA-approved soft bristle brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums, using small circular motions on all surfaces. Electric toothbrushes are also highly recommended. Floss daily: take 12–16 inches of dental floss, wrap around your middle fingers, and gently guide between teeth using a “C” shape around each tooth and under the gumline. Move the floss up and down to clean the side of each tooth. Rinse your mouth with water after brushing and after meals when brushing is not possible.
The general consensus among major health organizations is that amalgam fillings are safe. The ADA, CDC, World Health Organization, and FDA all support amalgam as safe — studies have failed to find any link between silver amalgam and any medical disorder. We are happy to discuss all available filling options with you and help you make the best choice for your individual situation and preferences.
Between visits, consistency is key: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss once a day, eat a balanced diet and limit sugary snacks and drinks, drink fluoridated water, and avoid tobacco in all forms. Do not use your teeth as tools. Wear a mouthguard during contact sports. If you notice any sensitivity, pain, or changes in your mouth, call us promptly — early treatment is always simpler and less costly than waiting.
